December Newsletter

Alert - Springvale Road is undergoing significant road works which will continue for some months. Long delays can affect traffic travelling from Mitcham/Doncaster Road heading north to the club and heading south from the club.

Blackburn Road or Old Warrandyte Rd are good alternatives

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

On behalf of the Committee of Management I wish all members a Happy Christmas and a great New Year.  We would love to see as many of you as possible at the Christmas party on December 10th.  If you can come, there is still time to put your name down this week.

We continue to do well in our Pennant Competitions.  THE RVBA 2nd, 3rd and 4th sides are all on top at time of writing which is a wonderful achievement seeing all 3 sides were promoted from lower divisions in 2008/9.  The VLBA sides are also doing very well with the 1st side on top and the 3rd side in second place in their sections.

Twilight Bowls continues to attract good numbers but we can still take more! Why not bring your non-bowling friends to Twilight Bowls so that they can be introduced to our friendly club.

I am please to say that Jackie Beavis has agreed to take on the Garden Co-ordinator's role.  I know Jackie will be pleased to hear from anyone who can assist in keeping up Jim's good work on our gardens, especially if you can help water the gardens on Wednesday mornings?  If you can offer a couple of hours a week or a fortnight, please give her a call.

On behalf of all at Donvale I would like to thank Jim for his years of tireless work at our club.

Once again, I wish all members a Happy Christmas and a successful New Year.

Dates for your diary -

  • Donvale Bowls Club Christmas Party on Thursday 10th December at Casavini Restaurant, the poster is up and there is still some space if you would like to be there, new members and their partners are very welcome. If you are stuck for a table give Anne Robinson a call on 9841 7621 and we will ensure a pleasurable place is found for you. [
  • A Christmas celebration after the last home and away game for 2009 on 19th December, all members are welcome. Please put this date in your diary.

News from the bar -

In response to member requests, we now have bottles of red and white wine available from the bar at a very reasonable price of $10 per bottle. Please note, this wine will only be available to purchase by the bottle so the opportunity is there to share a bottle with others if they so desire.

This is a trial period to see the initiative is successful or not, after which we will advise members whether the practice will continue. Cask wine continues to be available by the glass.

New members this month

We introduce two new members this month - Patricia Young and Neil Dusting. Pat, our ex Mayor of Manningham has eventually found the time to join us.  After a busy public life, Pat is looking forward to enjoying some rest and relaxation playing bowls.  She is enjoying coaching with Keith Rochow and will soon be around the club to play.

Neil Dusting joins us from Ringwood Bowls Club and we look forward to seeing Neil playing pennant for us shortly, when his transfer is completed.

Member news -

Brenda Manifold, Sandra Brown and Debbie Strybosch played in the Group Singles last week at Bennetswood.  Unfortunately they didn't make it through to the second game. Brenda had the closest game and was pipped on the last end 24/25.  Good to see our bowlers entering the Group competitions. They provide great experience and good competition.

Six of our VLBA members entered the Novices competition and put in some good bowls.  Julia De Marchi and Summer O'Connor entered as second year bowlers, while Joy Riley, Ann Henry, Bec Clark and Margaret Cunningham each entered as first year bowlers.

Julia has moved into the second round to be played this Sunday afternoon at Yarra Glen .  We all wish the best for you in the next contest Julia.  To our other entrants, you put in a great effort and hopefully enjoyed the experience ready to go again next year.

Exciting news for Julia De Marchi arrived in the mail yesterday.  Julia has been picked to play for Victoria in the Under 18 State Squad and will play in Adelaide on January 11, - 14th.

Congratulations Julia, enjoy the fun and the company.

Information about our members entering Group or State events is welcome please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

40/40 Bowls Thursday nights -

has struggled to attract bowlers to date and during the hectic Christmas season it has been put on hold. We will look and getting it back up and underway mid January 2010, gee that sounds a long way off!

First Aid Box - A second reminder that we now have a first aid box in the bowling equipment shed which has the basic needs for comfort, floor mat, blanket, a pillow and CPR masks, when helping a bowler, member or guest in distress.  Please remember the procedure for assistance. If in any doubt, call 000, answer their questions accurately and follow their instructions to the letter.  They will decide whether we need an ambulance or not.

RVBA News -

amazing what a few wins can do to help people enjoy their bowls??

After a slow start we have settled down and our teams are now working well together and producing really good results. Guess what? The season is now half way through already, yes last Saturday was the halfway point - get ready here come the finals???

We are looking for a really big second half of the season.

Again special thank you to all the emergencies and new bowlers who have stepped forward to assist over recent weeks, it is really appreciated and we have certainly uncovered some potential for the future.

  • We are organizing a Christmas celebration after the last home and away game for 2009 on 19th December, all members are welcome and we would like all players to try and return from away games and join in. Please put this date in your diary.
  • Championship matches are progressing really well and it is pleasing to see many newer bowlers / members pushing on in the events. Please keep an eye on dates for when matches need to be played and if having difficulties please let one of the selectors know ASAP.
  • Remember 100Up / pairs / triples and mixed pairs are up and underway. Good luck to all involved.

VLBA News

The Christmas Hamper raffle has begun, please buy your tickets and return them with your $5 as soon as possible to Barbara Drew. The raffle will be drawn at the last Twilight Bowls night of the season.

The VLBA Committee meeting for December will now be on Monday 14th Dec NOT 21st Dec

VLBA Selection -

We have passed the halfway mark for the season. The 1st side sits on top of their section, a game clear of their nearest rival with a very healthy percentage.  The 2nd side is in 6th position - 2 abandoned games and 1 draw has not helped their score. The 3rd side is in 2nd position and will be challenging the topside soon.  The 4th side has had ups and downs but is gaining experience and having lots of fun.

Championship draws are up on the notice board in the passage. Please note the dates for completion of each round and remember that it is the responsibility of the first mentioned player to contact their opponent to organise a date and time to play.

Club jackets / club shirts.

The club holds a supply of shirts for new bowlers.

However if you need another top we may be able to assist from stock or take an order, please contact Graham Howard or Anne Robinson.
