Alert - Springvale Road is still undergoing significant road works.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE.

We're now in the final stages of our pennant competitions and several of our sides are in the running for some finals action. Let's give our all to ensure a great end to our season.

Our RVBA and VLBA club singles matches have now all been completed. Congratulations to our RVBA Champion, Mike Brown and Minor Champion, David Mattiazzo and to our VLBA Champion, Julie Wilkins and Minor Champion, Pauline Smit. Julie also did well in finishing in the final four of the VLBA Zone Champion of Champions competition recently contested by 23 Clubs Champions.

Well done Tournament Committee on running a successful Australia Day social day and well done David Mattiazzo in leading a rousing rendition of "Advance Australia Fair"!

On the 31st January Julia De Marchi contested the VLBA Novice singles event at Euroa. Congratulations to Julia in getting through to the finals.

Also on the 31st January we held our annual Strapp Ford Invitational and we thank our great sponsors Strapp Ford for making the day possible. Thanks also to Geoff Smith, Graham Howard and David Mitchell for running the day and to Cheryl Howard, Megan Bourke, Jan Vickerman and Brenda Manifold for their work in the kitchen. Thanks to Lindsay Ridgwell and Neil Dusting for manning the bar.

And now for some "Don't's" and "Dos".

  • Please don't play on the grass green when the "Green Closed" sign has been put out by the Greens Director;
  • Please don't sit on the bank with your feet in the ditches or worse, on the edge of the green. This only creates little runs for bowls to go into the ditch;
  • Please do lock the small shed and the front gate if no other member is around, even if it's in the middle of the day. It may be that no one else will come to the club;
  • Please do wear your name tag. The chairman is finding it hard to remember everyone's name and I'm sure a few other people are having similar difficulties.

Your co-operation in these simple requests is much appreciated.

Posters advertising The AUSTRALIAN OPEN, February 14th-20 and Over 60's from February 19th-20th are on the notice boards.

To order tickets please use the web site given on the posters. If anyone would like to organize a group and purchase a number of tickets, please see Anne Robinson for an order form

Tournament Committee -Australia Day was a successful day for the 34 bowlers who came and celebrated at the club. A ditch to ditch competition started the afternoon off with the prize going to Teresa Bowen. Bowlers enjoyed a fine afternoon bowling with a break for afternoon tea which consisted of fresh sandwiches and scones with jam and cream. At the end of play, prizes were awarded to some lucky bowlers. A good time was had by all and the committee extends many thanks to all who helped to make the day a success.

Our next social day will be held on Labour Day Monday 8th March 2010. We will begin with a sausage sizzle for lunch followed by an afternoon of bowling. The cost will be $12.00 for players. Non-playing members are welcome to join us for lunch at a cost of $7.00. Please keep an eye out for the notice and signup sheet on the front desk. We would like to see as many members as possible come along to enjoy the day.

The Donvale Bowls Club Presentation Night is coming up. This is the night when we recognise our high achievers in our club competitions. The venue is Casavini, on Thursday April 15th at the usual time of 7pm for 7.30pm. Please start thinking about your tables ready for the sign up sheet. Tables of up to 10 while smaller group and single bookings will be accommodated sensitively! This is advance notice to enable everyone to organise themselves before the last minute.

Nominations for 'The Keith Rochow Club Person of the Year' -.The Doncaster Cricket Club provided us with this trophy to be awarded, each year, to a member who has contributed significantly to the club over the current season.  We have many members who quietly go about helping the club in various ways and this is one simple way to acknowledge their contribution.  Please put your nominations, in writing, into Anne Robinson's mail box, (marked Inc Secretary) in the club rooms ready for the Inc meeting in March.

Help Needed for the Garden Group - Thank you to those members who have offered help with the weeding in the garden. Now Jackie is looking for some help with the watering on Wednesday mornings.  Our time is early but for the over 70's, that magical age, the times are later than for some of us!  If two or three people offer to help it would only be once or twice a month each. If you can help, please give Jackie a call on 9848 2130

New members this month - we've had more successful months - It must be the holiday season!

Member news - Julia continues to develop her skill and competition experience.  After winning the Zone 13 District Novices competition on 13th December at Yarra Glen she continued her success at Euroa on January 31st and to both her own, her family and her spectators delight has won her way through to the semi-finals.  They will be held at Euroa Bowling Club on Sunday 7th Feb, the first game begins at 9am. We are not sure about a whole weekend at Euroa but the day trip is easy.

                                                                                                                                    Continued....

The Victorian Under 18 State Squad played in Adelaide on January 11, - 14th and according to Julia they had a great time, played strong competition  with some excellent young bowlers, and came third in the completion.

Congratulations Julia, keep enjoying the fun and the company.

Julie Wilkins, VLBA Club Champion for 2010, played in the Zone Champion of Champions on 25th January at Heatherdale Bowls Club and, by winning both games, secured her place in the quarter finals played on 17th Jan.  She won her first game but went down in the second to a very strong opponent, from Richmond Union, who went on to become the District Champion of Champions.

Congratulations on an excellent performance Julie.

RVBA News - well another month finished - only three games to the finals.

 January has seen a hectic start to the New Year -

THURSDAY 14TH JANUARY - we enjoyed a practice session, followed by a players meeting to focus on, what we set out to achieve for this season, what we can still achieve out of the 2009/10 season and how to do it?

60 plus members attended and a successful and challenging practice session was organised by Lachlan Tighe and Rowan Sharp. A sausage sizzle and the bar provided refreshments before the meeting, which was led by Lachlan and Rowan who discussed the opportunities still available for this season for our teams.

THURSDAY 21ST January - The finals of RVBA Club Singles and Minor championships were played with a sizable crowd to support the finalists.  Again both games were good to watch and a great afternoon was had by all.

Congratulations to the four finalists, for not only successfully working their way through the various draws, but also for the spirit in which the finals were played.

Michael Brown overcame Eddie Azzopardi in the Club Singles; Michael got off to a great start but had to overcome a strong fight back from Eddie.

David Mattiazzo overcame David Mitchell in the Club Minor Singles after a solid performance from both players.

Championship matches (100 Up / Pairs / Triples / Mixed Pairs) are progressing really well and it is pleasing to see many newer bowlers / members pushing on in the events. Please keep an eye on dates for when matches need to be played and if having difficulties please let one of the selectors know ASAP.

"Strapp Ford Invitational Fours Tournament" - was conducted at the club on Sunday.

14 teams played 3 games of 13 ends, for $1000.00 in prize money.

8 visiting teams and 6 Donvale teams.

The day was a great success, despite the heat and although fielding six teams Donvale teams put up a great showing.

Three of our teams won a share of the prize money (best round winners) - however the overall winners were teams from Ringwood first and Marysville second.

Congratulations and thank you to all involved.

VLBA News - All teams continue to do well with the first team being secure on top of the ladder, looking forward to the finals and will be promoted to A1 next season. The other three teams are still well placed with the second side in 7th spot and likely to stay in A2 for the next season. The third team has the opportunity to regain 2nd position and be promoted to A2 next season. The fourth side is in 6th position and well placed to win a couple more games.

All teams are trying hard to finish the season on a winning streak.

Please remember to lock the shed and the gate when you are the last person on the greens.

On a number of occasions members have arrived at the club to find the gate and or the shed containing our equipment left open.  An open gate attracts stray dogs and sometimes their owners but more worrying are the undesirables who are intent on mischief. We have experienced cut fences, rink markers used as arrows, with the green used as a target, and scoops damaged, so the idea is to keep the grounds closed.

Club jackets / club shirts. The club holds a supply of shirts for new bowlers.

However if you need another top we may be able to assist from stock or take an order. The next order will be during winter ready for the 2010/11 season.  Please contact Graham Howard or Anne Robinson if you are thinking of purchasing either a club jacket or shirt.

www.donvalebowls.com.au - our club website continues to grow with new pages being added all the time, thanks to Sheldon and his back up Greg.

The Members Section now contains coaching drills, teams, results, championship draws etc.etc.  Usage of the site continues to grow rapidly and our sponsors have link for promotions etc.

If you are not registered yet please do, if you are registered and having any difficulties please contact Sheldon for guidance.

Editors Note - Does the newsletter need a change of style or perhaps a bit of a lift?  Your current editor has really enjoyed putting it all together and is ready to give someone else the opportunity so there is a job going for someone who is interested to be part of the newsy stuff!  It is not difficult and doesn't take a lot of time so feel free to call me to talk about how it all happens. I have some good short cuts so that we don't miss too much!

That's all folks until next month, good health and good bowling in 2010 - Anne Robinson
